A note on storyline

Final Fantasy XIV allows players to begin in one of three starting cities: Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul’dah.  Each has a separate beginning story that converges into one main story starting from rank 20.

Meet Shaku Kamui, new adventurer and your main character of this FFXIV blog.  A miqo’te of the Keepers of the Moon clan, she was born on the 20th Sun of the 6th Umbral Moon under the Guardian Althyk, the Keeper.

A note on Shaku’s name

Shaku (シャク) is a Japanese “on” reading of the first Chinese character in my Korean name (石) and her birthday, the 20th Sun of the 6th Umbral Moon, translates to December 20th, my real-life birthday.  The deity associated with this month is Althyk the Keeper who is the surveyor of change and space and god of time. He commands the element of Earth which is fitting because the character “石” means “stone.”  He is most often depicted as an austere emperor wielding a mythril greataxe. His symbol is the hourglass.

On the southern coast of the island of Vylbrand, under the shadow of ancient cliffs worn by the relentless onslaught of the Rhotano Sea, lies the maritime city-state of Limsa Lominsa. Said to be blessed by the goddess of navigation, Llymlaen, the city is spread out over countless tiny islands, each connected by sturdy bridges of iron and wood construction, earning her the name the “Navigator’s Veil” from traveling bards who have witnessed the city’s beauty from afar.  Having become a new adventurer, Shaku eagerly sets off on a ship bound towards the port city of Limsa Lominsa to make a name for herself…

Shaku’s Journal Entries

I wake to the soft sound of singing, yet upon looking around, I see no one resembling a songstress. Perhaps one of the other passengers knows something.

When my exploration of the hold leads me above decks, I find the ship has sailed into the midst of a mighty storm. To make matters worse, a horde of slavering sea beasts has spilled onto the ship and begun to harass her hopelessly outnumbered crew. I join Sthalmann and Y’shtola in battle, and help them to repel the aurelias.

The storm has retreated,and with it the aurelias. However, several mysteries remain, the biggest being the colossal beast which I witnessed leap forth from the depths and nearly destroy the ship. Now that I have safely arrived in Limsa Lominsa, perhaps it is best to start by gathering information that may help shed light on the events that occurred on my journey.

Legend holds that Limsa Lominsa was founded shortly after the remnants of a giant armada fled from its homeland following a crushing defeat. Llymlaen is said to have taken pity on the plight of these brave sailors, and guided them to the shallows of a rocky bay where their ships were grounded upon the sharp rocks. With no home to return to, the sailors chose to settle in this newly-found land, and use the remnants of their vessels to begin construction of a city.

However, the sailors never forget their nautical backgrounds, and once a new fleet was in order, they would take to the waters again. It was only a matter of time before their influence spread and they ruled the five seas of Eorzea. Thus, the Limsan thalassocracy was born.

Remnants of this legend live on even today in the nation’s ruling party, whose members still address their leader as Admiral.

Its economy is driven by shipbuilding, fishing, and blacksmithing, but the majority of wealth comes from the lucrative shipping industry.

To maintain the safety of its maritime routes, the city employs a formidable navy known as the Knights of the Barracuda. However, even in the waters nearby the city, pirate bands run rampant, raving and pillaging.
