I TALKED TO MAKOTO SHINKAI TODAY!!!!!!!

.

.

Ahem- sorry about that.  As some of you may know, I’m currently attending New York Comic Con/Anime Festival this weekend and it turns out when I went to the Makoto Shinkai panel today, I got to speak with him briefly afterwards!  There’s still one more day left (Sunday) and I will hopefully be able to get an autograph from him then.  But we’ll save all of that for my full comic con/anime festival blog later!  In the meantime, in honor of this very special personal occasion, I present this week’s pick – a behind the scenes video that shows some of Makoto Shinkai’s work process.  The video specifically shows the making of Egao” or みんなのうた「笑顔」 (Minna no Uta “Egao”), a music video for Hiromi Iwasaki which Makoto Shinkai directed back in 2003.

Pretty amazing stuff huh?  For “Egao,” Makoto Shinkai didn’t animate, but you can see what programs he uses, how he creates his backgrounds, creates his 3d, composites… all sorts of things!  I won’t get into any technical details, but I’m sure any animators out there will love picking out all the details in this video.  And finally, here’s the final video for anyone who hasn’t seen it!
