Hiya everyone and welcome to Danny’s Picks.  Today I’d like to take a look back at an old music video by a very popular American band… animated by a very popular Japanese animation studio!  Yes, this is “Breaking the Habit” by Linkin Park!  Here’s a quick rundown from wiki (full article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaking_the_Habit)

The music video for “Breaking the Habit” was animated by Studio Gonzo, it was directed by Joe Hahn and co-produced by Eric Calderon. It uses an anime-stylization which was supervised by Kazuto Nakazawa, who had previously directed the animated segment of Quentin Tarantino‘s Kill Bill Vol. 1 among other things. The video was shot of the band performing the song and was later rotoscoped. The video has gone on to be a favorite amongst MTV viewers, going as far as winning the 2004 MTV VMA Viewer’s Choice Award.

This was a favorite song of mine back in the day!  Add the fact that you have such a cool music video by a big anime studio and you have a winner, especially one that utilizes such rough, stylized animation that in my opinion is under appreciated in mainstream anime/animation culture.  If you liked this, be sure to check out some of Kazuto Nakazawa’s (the animator’s) other works, “Kid’s Story” and “A Detective Story” from The Animatrix, Parasite Dolls, the animated sequence from Kill Bill Vol. 1 and the Moon Drive segment of Genius Party Beyond!
