Update – WordGirl

Hello everyone, we’ve got a pretty big update today – all of the clips Danny animated for the show “WordGirl!”

.

.

WordGirl is an animated show on PBS Kids GO!  Here’s a nice summary of the story from wiki:

.

.

The series stars WordGirl, an alien with superpowers whose secret identity is Becky Botsford, a 10½ year old fifth grade student. WordGirl was born on the fictional planet Lexicon (also a term referring to the vocabulary of a language or to a dictionary) but was sent away after sneaking onto a spaceship and sleeping there. Captain Huggy Face, a monkey who was a pilot in the Lexicon Air Force, piloted the ship, but lost control when WordGirl awoke, and crash-landed on Earth (more specifically in Fair City), a planet that affords WordGirl her superpowers, including flight and super strength. WordGirl utilizes these powers to save her adoptive home, using her downed spacecraft as a secret base of operations. WordGirl and Captain Huggy Face fight crime together. read more

Hi everyone, Marina here with Danny for some website updates!

.

.

Heylo.

.

.

First of all, you may have noticed that Danny has updated the layout of the site a bit!  Namely, the two menu bars are now one menu, located on the left side of the site.  Artwork can also be accessed from the top header menu.  Why the change Danny?

.

It’s mostly “under the hood” type stuff.  Dealing with having your main page in an iframe was more hassle than it was worth.  Search engines will link to wordpress pages, not to the main site… Artwork images can utilize lightbox, instead of-

Short version Danny, short version.

.

.

It’s better this way.

.

.

Mmm fine.  Moving on, we have some new sketchbook pages from Danny’s second book.

.

.

I’m trying to draw more consistently in my sketchbook now, so hopefully I can do a sketchbook update once a month from here on out.

Hello everyone, Marina here!  We have a couple of different stuff to share so there’ll be some variety in today’s update~  First of all, the “Illustration” section is now a subsection under the renamed “Digital Artwork” section.  Can you tell us why Danny?

.

Basically it’s because I finally have some proper illustrations to show!  Typically, illustrations have characters within backgrounds.  This is different than character designs which are meant to isolate the character and focus on its design.  The more broad term “Digital Artwork” works better to encompass both types of art, as well as some future sections I may plan on adding, such as concept art, color studies, etc.

Today we bring you the first two illustrations, as well as an illustration in progress (still no background) and a new character design!  They can, of course, be found in their respective sections – Illustration, In Progress, and Character Design.  But for convenience sake, we’ll also start adding thumbnails within the blogs.  Here they are!

Hmm… you know, now that I look at it, it seems like you tend to draw women a lot, don’t you Danny?

.

.

If you’re gonna spend a few hours staring at something, I’d rather spend it looking at women over men.

.

.

You can’t be serious…

.

.

AHAHAHA HA HA ha ha….. ha…….. Just joking.  I’m sure I’ll have more drawings of really cool and bad ass looking guys up soon, so don’t worry all you ladies out there.  But then again, why bother when you’ve already got ME?!?  AAAHAHAHAHA-

Marina and Danny here with another update and today we have a bunch of new stuff for you~!  First off, we have a new section called “Process.”  Here, we can show everyone a bit more of Danny’s artistic process and put up some in progress stuff.  The first item added is character designs, can you tell us about those?

These are simply some character designs I’ve been working on recently.  I haven’t finalized any of the designs yet, but I scanned in what I had so far and quickly shaded them in to show you all what I’ve currently been working on.

.

Oh! We also have some new sketchbook pages!

.

.

Yup, I”m still in the middle of scanning and uploading this first book, so these are a bunch of pages from that.  I’ll probably be able to upload the rest in the next update.

.

And we also have a new video!  This one is called “The Making of Kensho.”

.

.

Yes, “the Making of Kensho” is a short little video I put together that shows some of the behind-the-scenes in making Kensho.  It features the original, first recording of the piano theme by Dione Tan.  It’s mostly made up of compositing shots as most of my early work was lost in a hard drive failure I had during the school year…

Yeah, you have terrible luck with stuff like that don’t you…

.

.

A motherboard failure, corrupted sectors in hard drives, mechanical hard drive failure, broken videocard, broken mp3 player, mp3 player I lost in studio, a bunch of broken earphones…

.

Aaaaaand he’s still going…

TWO POWER SUPPLY UNITS, MULTIPLE STICKS OF RAM, THE FIRST BATTERY FROM MY NEW PHONE WOULDN’T HOLD A CHARGE AND HAD TO FREAKIN BE REPLA-

Hey everyone!  Marina here again to give you all an update!  Danny’s uploaded two new movies!  The first, “A Dream” can be found on your left under animation, while the other, “Catharsis,” can be found under a new section, video!

.

I’ve been pretty busy lately with work but I finally got around to finish re-editing them, along with completely redoing the sound for “A Dream.”

.

.

Yes folks, this guy’s been staying up late getting these videos done while trying to keep on top of work.  Y’know, maybe if you didn’t watch so much anime all the time, you’d be a lot more efficient and not have to stay up all night…  So why don’t you tell us a little bit about the movies?

WAKE UP!!!

.

.

Uhhh, so let’s see…  “A Dream” is a short animation that was the final project for my advanced maya class.  It’s based off of an old Buddhist saying that describes the hidden, true nature of this world.  The movie is a dream where this hidden, subconscious world emerges, grows and overtakes our “conscious” world, illustrated by a city.

Oh, I believe the quote is from The Diamond Sutra, section XXXII: The Delusion of Appearances~!  For those wondering, “Thus have I heard” at the beginning of the animation is the very first line from The Diamond Sutra.  Now, “Catharsis” was based on a similar concept of “truth,” but one that ends very differently, huh?

Yes, “Catharsis” is a video starring yours truly about a man on an endless journey for truth, symbolized by light.  Conventionally, absolute truth is symbolized by the sun, true light.  However, here the man is constantly chasing after false truth, symbolized by light bulbs or false light and eventually he finds himself trapped within his own mind, his own insanity.  He then has a catharsis moment by rejecting the light bulb and breaking it, but will wake up only to be drawn towards false truth yet again.  The video is in this sense endlessly loop-able.  Btw how the heck did you know the exact section the dream quote was from??

Also for your information, catharsis means the purging of the emotions through certain kinds of art resulting in spiritual renewal.  It was his final for Intro to Video class back in sophomore year of college…  Oh!  I almost forgot to mention, we’ve also added some links in the friends page!  They’re all awesome artists you should all definitely check out!  It was really nice of them to let us add their links on our site, right Danny?
